Freelance work marketplace ยท How it works guide
Upwork moves money on clocks. Fixed-price money is held in escrow before work starts, hourly time is tracked by a work diary, and payouts clear after a hold. The table shows who acts at each step and what happens if nobody does. [1] [2] [3]

Upwork's money moves on timers. In one reported case, fixed-price funds were released automatically after 30 days, and the client was told mediation was no longer available. The safest habit is to set a reminder on the release date and to approve or dispute before it passes. [3]
Payouts take longer. A review site describes a five-day security hold, then about a week to clear. Two Trustpilot reviewers in September and November 2026 praised payouts. [2] [4]
On fixed-price work you fund the contract, and the money is held in escrow under Upwork's California escrow licence. Hourly work is billed from a work diary, so check the hours before you approve them. A dispute can cost more than the contract. One client paid a $337.50 arbitration fee to dispute a $255 contract. [1] [5] [3]
You bid with Connects, and the number a job needs can change while it is posted, so a bid can cost more than you expected. Hourly pay depends on the work diary. In a 2022 case, a week of hourly pay was reversed as "Low Activity" because the tracker recorded little typing or mouse use. [6] [5] [7]
Talent profiles build a record from work history, including client feedback, and badges such as Top Rated come from that record. Identity checks can hold an account. One 2025 post describes an account reviewed six days after its first milestone payment, then banned. [1] [8] [3]
Clients get stuck on the 30-day clock and on fee lines they did not read. Freelancers get stuck on Connects spent with no hire, and on account checks that come after the first payment. Several of the reported problems start with a clock nobody was watching. The complaints page shows what those clocks cost people. [3] [8]
