Y Combinator Co-Founder Matching Reviews

The public record of YC Co-Founder Matching is small: two Trustpilot reviews, a few Hacker News threads, and YC’s own counts. None gives an acceptance or team rate, so judge the free service by its published rules and by the one detailed account, which covers a single founder. [1] [2] [6]

Two Trustpilot reviews and one founder’s tally make up the record

The public record is small. Trustpilot lists two reviews for ycombinator.com, and only one covers matching. The Hacker News material is a launch link, a 2023 staff comment and a 2025 post. Only the 2025 post describes what happened to one person in detail. [1] [2] [4] [5]

The big number measures volume, not outcomes

YC’s homepage says it has made over 100K matches. The page doesn’t say what counts as a match, over what period, or out of how many invitations. At the July 2021 launch, YC reported 9,000 matches across 4,500 founders, about two per founder (9,000 ÷ 4,500 = 2). [6] [7]

The 2023 staff comment says “over 20 teams that met on the site have gotten funded by YC.” It gives no count of teams that met, so it can’t be turned into a rate. [4]

The unhappy accounts are single cases, and the happy ones are company claims

The one public complaint about an outcome is a one-star Trustpilot review posted March 18, 2026. The reviewer got about two matches. One match wanted a working prototype first, and another “just disappeared.” One review can’t show how common that is, but it shows what can happen. [1]

The positive side rests on the 2023 staff comment and YC’s totals. No public account in this record describes a team formed through matching that a reader can check.

One founder’s tally is the most detailed account

In a January 7, 2025 Hacker News post, a solo founder said they chatted with 3 of at least 70 profiles and got one deal from about 150 matches. That is about 4% of profiles (3 ÷ 70) and about 0.7% of matches (1 ÷ 150). The author says they “only chatted with a select few,” so the denominator is the author’s own count. [2]

A reply the same day asked for profile links by email and pointed to an in-product report option. The reply came from a commenter who described themselves as a YC group partner. [3]

How to read these accounts

Treat the 1-star review and the 2025 post as warnings about what can happen, not as rates. Check the dates, too: the launch figures are from 2021 and the staff comment from 2023. Give more weight to the matching page and the Startup School FAQ, which set out the rules you will actually live with. For the costs, see pricing. [6] [8]
