The complaints are about money getting stuck, and they are getting worse
Five of the 12 newest Trustpilot reviews (9 July to 29 October 2026) concern payouts or identity checks. The score fell from 2.6 in Toolradar’s August check to 1.9 on Trustpilot on 4 November, from 68 reviews. The sample is self-selected, so it shows what people complain about, not how often a payout is held. [1] [12]
Payouts: plan for a hold you cannot predict
Contra may hold, refuse or offset a payout for suspected fraud, a possible dispute or chargeback, missing tax or identity information, or legal compliance. Funds are released once the hold is no longer needed. The Terms set no maximum length, and Contra’s target is 24 hours. [4] [2]
What to do: keep your identity and tax details current before you need the money, and do not promise a client a payment date until the first payout has cleared. If a hold passes 24 hours, write to support and keep a copy of every reply. [2] [3]
Verification: most failures are fixable on the first try
Contra’s help article lists four reasons for failure: the ID was issued in a different country from the one you selected, the document type is wrong, the photo is blurry or has glare, or the document has expired. Six Trustpilot reviewers describe failures between July 2025 and October 2026, and one had a payment held while the review was pending. [6] [1]
What to do: choose the country that issued your ID, not the one you live in, photograph it in good light, and check that it has not expired before you upload. [5] [6]
Suspensions: the Terms let Contra act without giving a reason
The Terms allow Contra to suspend or terminate any freelancer or client for any reason, at its discretion and without notice. Trustpilot reviews describe accounts or payouts suspended with no explanation, and one permanent ban for messaging experienced freelancers. Two reviews describe a client blocked after messaging several freelancers, or a profile deleted after a price complaint, so treat them as warnings, not a rate. [4] [1]
What to do: keep every conversation and payment on Contra. Moving a client’s payment off the platform leaves it outside escrow, holds and dispute steps. [4] [7]
Disputes: the clock matters more than the outcome
One freelancer delivered work, the client got a refund, and the freelancer received nothing, according to a review from 25 August 2026. Clients also report deposit and escrow disputes, with two reviews in May and November 2025. For projects created after 19 May 2026, the dispute process gives a 14-day assistance period, then three months in escrow. Contra says it does not decide the outcome. [1] [7] [8]
What to do: start the dispute steps as soon as a problem appears. Agree a resolution with the other party before the three-month escrow hold ends. Projects created before 19 May 2026 follow an older route, so ask support in writing what applies to yours. [7] [8]
Support: expect automated replies and put everything in writing
Trustpilot reviews call replies AI-only, “AI-first” or non-existent, and say invoicing questions went unanswered. Fastlancer and Smart Remote Gigs list automated support as a common complaint. Contra replied to 96% of negative reviews on Trustpilot, usually within a week, so the reply rate is high even when the problem remains. [1] [9] [10]
What to do: send each request by email or ticket, keep the reference number, and record the date you asked. [1]
