Selective talent network and AI data services ยท Complaints guide
Toptal's complaints have moved from unfilled roles in 2015 to screening that feels unfair and billing that is not in writing. Most come from single accounts, so the pattern is about unclear terms more than widespread failure. [8] [1] [13]

In 2015 and 2016, Hacker News members complained that listed roles often went unfilled and that Toptal would not reassign a demanding client. Those accounts are old, and each comes from one or two people. The complaints in 2026 are different: screening that talent call opaque, and billing that clients find unclear. [13]
The current complaints come from a small sample. Two of about 60 recent Trustpilot reviews (August to October 2026) allege unfair screening or overbilling, and one more describes a test that support would not reopen. None of these is confirmed, and each is a single account. [8]
The most consistent talent complaint is that screening felt unfair or opaque. In October 2026 a two-star reviewer says the test seemed unfair, support would not reopen the assessment, and a camera-off rule was never stated. A one-star reviewer alleges discrimination. That is an allegation, not a finding. [8]
Toptal says fewer than 3 percent of applicants are accepted, and it publishes five screening stages as shares of all applicants. The stages are public; the test's content and pass rule are not. What to do: ask for the rules and format in writing before you start, and keep a copy of what you were told. [2] [3]
Toptal does not publish how long a rejected applicant must wait before reapplying. Reports range from 30 days to six months, and accounts differ on a 2017 case. The talent FAQ gives no length. [4]
Toptal says it pays talent 'on time', with no payment schedule in its FAQ. Three 2026 talent reviews call payment timely. One 2023 account says payment takes four to six weeks. [4] [7] [12]
What to do: ask for the payment schedule and the reapplication wait in writing before you accept a role. Keep your own record of each invoice date and payment date, so a late payment is easy to show. [4]
TopAccess renews each year unless you cancel by 11:59 pm Eastern on the day before renewal. Cancelling early does not stop the remaining monthly payments, and a late payment fee of up to $30 applies. Toptal can also reject a request without giving a reason. [6]
What to do: put the renewal date in your calendar before you pay the first installment, and cancel before the deadline if you do not plan to renew. Early cancellation will not reduce what you still owe. [6]
A one-star client review from 2026, labelled as company-invited, says the team overcharged, the project ran over budget and stayed unfinished, and communication was poor. That is one account, and its claims are unverified. [7]
The trial is the other pressure point. Toptal's FAQ says a client is not billed if not completely satisfied, while Cadence says trial hours are billable and convert unless the trial ends in the window. The FAQ does not say whether hours already worked are refunded if you end early. [1] [9]
What to do: get the trial terms, the refund position on hours already worked and the invoice schedule in writing before the trial starts. Send any cancellation in writing at least three business days before the next billing date, as the platform terms require. [5] [1]
Four third-party guides say clients pay a $500 refundable deposit before matching, but Toptal's FAQ and platform terms do not mention one. The start date of the $79 monthly subscription is also disputed: the FAQ says charging starts when you proceed with matching, and The Frontend Company says it runs while the account is active. [10] [11] [9] [1]
What to do: ask Toptal in writing whether a deposit applies and when the subscription starts, before you proceed with matching. Those two answers decide what you pay before any work begins. [1]
