| Toptal's cut | None on your earnings, according to the talent FAQ[1] |
| Acceptance | Fewer than 3 percent of applicants, per Toptal[2] |
| Screening | Three to eight weeks; the test project one to three weeks[3] |
| Reapplying after rejection | 30 days to six months (reports); not published[1] |
| When you're paid | 'On time', no schedule; one 2023 account says four to six weeks[1] [10] |
| Currency | US dollars[1] |
| Hours you can offer | 0 to 50 a week; full-time is 40 hours, part-time 20[1] |
| TopAccess | Billed annually in 12 monthly installments; price not in its terms[4] |
Toptal does the finding. Once you are accepted, its matching team places you on jobs, and members can browse and apply to eligible roles. You set your own hourly rate, and the FAQ says Toptal takes no cut of your earnings. The margin on the client side never reaches you. [1]
The cost is time and certainty. Screening takes three to eight weeks, and the test project one to three weeks, by Toptal's own account. Rejection means a wait before you can reapply, and Toptal does not publish its length. Reports range from 30 days to six months, which is the cost to plan around. [3] [1]
TopAccess is the paid option. It is billed annually in 12 monthly installments and renews each year unless you cancel by 11:59 pm Eastern on the day before renewal. Cancelling early does not reduce what you owe, and it does not guarantee acceptance, so count it as a cost before you count it as a benefit. [4]
Getting through screening. Toptal says it accepts fewer than 3 percent of applicants. Reviewers describe the screening as detailed and multi-round, and a two-star review says a test seemed unfair and support would not reopen it. Ask for the rules in writing before you start, because the FAQ does not publish the assessment's length or pass rule. [2] [8] [9]
Setting your rate. The FAQ says you set your own rate. One freelancer advises holding your rate and flexing only to fit a client's budget, but that is one person's advice from a high rate. Old 2015 accounts describe rates set by Toptal, which conflicts with the current FAQ. [1] [10] [11]
The wait for work. Time to the first project varies. A 2015 member started part-time work within 15 days, and a 2026 reviewer's first engagement came in under a week. Availability is the one lever the FAQ names, so set your profile to 'currently available' as soon as you can take work. [11] [8] [1]
Getting paid. Talent are paid in US dollars, and the FAQ says 'on time' with no schedule or method. One 2023 account reports four to six weeks, and three 2026 reviews call payment timely. Plan for the slower figure until you have the schedule in writing. [1] [10] [8]
Toptal's engagement types are full-time at 40 hours a week, part-time at 20 hours, or hourly with manual time tracking. You can set availability from 0 to 50 hours a week and work on more than one Toptal job. The site says clients prefer full-time schedules. [1]
Freelancers are not Toptal employees and are not eligible for visa sponsorship, so check the rules before you plan a move. Signing up also means accepting Toptal's Terms of Service, its Privacy Policy and a 'Sourced Talent Matching Agreement'. The terms name Toptal, LLC and its affiliates as the contracting party, under New York law. [1] [5] [6]
Meetings made through Toptal's systems may be recorded or monitored, and identity checks run through a biometric process with outside vendors. Ask Toptal for the matching agreement's text before you sign, since it is the likely source of your contract and fee terms. [5] [7]
Yes, if you are senior and can wait. The FAQ says you keep your rate and Toptal takes no cut, and reviewers praise its support. No, if you need pay on a fixed date or cannot wait out a rejection. Payment timing is unpublished, and a rejection can mean months before you can reapply. [1] [2] [3]
