Upwork Alternatives

Upwork suits contracts that run for weeks or months, and the platform holds fixed-price money. Its bids cost Connects, and its client fee adds 5%. Fiverr takes more from small orders, Contra charges freelancers no commission but has a thin job board. Pick by how you find the work, not by the headline fee. [1] [2] [3]

Why people look beyond Upwork

Freelancers who leave name the same things: fees, Connects spent without a hire, and AI tools that make clients harder to reach. Two Hacker News threads from March 2025 and July 2026 carry those complaints, with 3 and 16 commenters. That is a pattern to weigh, not a rate. [5]

Clients who want one specialist, not a bid queue, face 20 to 50 bids on a typical post, according to a beginner guide, and one 2020 client counted more than 30 on a single post. [6] [7]

Fiverr: keeps more from small orders

Fiverr keeps 20% of each completed order from the seller, and charges the buyer 5.5% plus $3.50 on orders under $200. On a $100 order Fiverr keeps $29, against $5 to $20 on Upwork. On a $1,000 job Fiverr keeps $255, and Upwork keeps $50 to $200. [8] [2] [9] [1]

Fiverr's take rate, which counts both sides, was 28.2% for the 12 months to September 2026. Choose Fiverr when the job already exists as a packaged gig and the buyer wants it quickly. Upwork's own numbers are on the pricing page. [10]

Contra: no commission, but bring your own clients

Contra's pricing page lists a Free plan and a Pro plan at $29 a month or $199 a year. On Free, the client pays $15 on payments under $500 and $29 on payments of $500 or more, and Pro removes that fee. Contra charges freelancers no commission, but its client fee pages list platform and processing fees, so read them before you price a project. [3] [11] [12]

Contra's Trustpilot score is 1.9 out of 5 from 68 reviews, with 63% one-star. Several review sites describe a thin job board with few open listings. Use Contra to bill clients you already have, not to find new ones. [13] [14] [15] [16]

Toptal: the premium end, if you can get in

Toptal accepts about 3% of applicants, after a review of expertise and a portfolio or test, a live problem session and a project. Freelancers set their own rates. Client costs are the open question, so ask for a quote before you budget. [17]

Omnitwine: finding one client or freelancer for a defined job

Omnitwine is free and takes no cut. Tell its AI that you want a client or a freelancer for one defined job, and it suggests members on the other side who fit, each with a reason. Signed-in members can also browse its member directory, which lists every member's name, email and LinkedIn. Both people decide whether to connect, then deal with each other directly. [18] [4] [20]

It does not hold payment, run contracts or verify skills, and it is a young network, so who you meet depends on who has joined. If you're worried about payment, we recommend using an escrow service. [4]

How to choose

If the work is a packaged, small job that you need quickly, Fiverr is faster and costs more. If you're hiring for a contract that runs for weeks, and you want the platform to hold fixed-price money, use Upwork and budget for its 5% client fee. If you bill clients you already have, Contra costs freelancers the least. If you're a senior specialist, apply to Toptal. And if you want one specific client or freelancer for a defined job, Omnitwine can suggest members who fit, but it holds no payment and does not guarantee a reply. [1] [3] [17] [18]
