Freelance work marketplace ยท Freelancers guide
Upwork takes 0% to 15% from freelancers per contract, less than Fiverr's 20%, but you pay Connects to bid whether or not you win. Expect months of bidding before a first contract. Freelancer Plus pays off only if you bill more than about $400 a month directly. [1] [2] [3]

| Your fee | 0% to 15% per contract, fixed when it starts; a flat 10% before May 2025[1] |
| The client's fee | 5% on Basic, or 10% on Business Plus; paid by the client, not you[1] |
| Connects | About $0.15 each; 10 free a month on Basic[2] [4] |
| Withdrawal fee | $2.99 reported in October 2026; $30 to a non-US bank in a 2022 post[11] [13] |
| Payout timing | Five-day hold, then about a week, per a review site; payouts praised by two reviewers[2] [11] |
| Identity check | Can be requested; reviews describe closed accounts after checks[9] |
| Time to first contract | No measured figure; one new freelancer reports a job with no timeline[11] |
Fixed-price money is held in escrow before you start, under Upwork's California escrow licence. Hourly work runs through a work diary, which records the hours you log. Upwork had 763,000 active clients in Q2 2026, down 4%, so the pool is large but shrinking. [1] [4] [5]
On a $1,000 contract you keep $850 to $1,000 on Upwork. Fiverr takes 20% of the same order, so you would keep $800 there. Plan for the top of the range, because the rate depends on category and competition, and Self Employed reports it reaches 15% in common categories. [1] [6] [7]
Connects come on top. At $0.15 each, a bid that uses 10 Connects costs $1.50, so 20 losing bids cost $30. Connects per bid vary by job. [2] [8]
Setup and identity. Identity checks can hold an account, and suspensions that follow checks are the most serious freelancer complaint. Keep your ID and phone number current before you start. [9] [10]
Bidding. A beginner guide says 20 to 50 bids is typical on a post. One freelancer viewed 5 of 18 proposals in a month, about 28%. [3] [9]
The first contract. No measured timeline exists for a first contract. One new freelancer reports a remote job through the platform, with no timeline given. In a 2023 Hacker News thread, most commenters said their best work came from referrals. [11] [12]
Withdrawals. A $2.99 fee was reported in October 2026, and a 2022 post described $30 to a non-US bank. Check the fee for your payout method before your first withdrawal. [11] [13]
Profiles build a record from work history and client feedback, and badges such as Top Rated come from that record. Freelancer Plus adds 90 Connects over Basic for $19.99. At $0.15 each, those 90 Connects cost $13.50 if bought as needed, so the plan does not pay off on bids. It pays off through Direct Contracts above about $400 a month of direct billing. [1] [2] [4]
Upwork can use your work to train AI unless you opt out, through Settings, Privacy Settings and AI Preferences. Opting out is not retroactive, and training uses a contract only if both sides opted in. Set this before your first contract. [14] [15]
Requests to move to Telegram or WhatsApp, or to pay by crypto or wire, are warning signs, and they take the payment outside escrow. Confirm every price change in writing, because one 2025 dispute turned on that. [2] [9]

Yes, if you can win fixed-price or hourly work in a niche you know and you will budget for Connects. Do not make it your only income: active clients fell, and bidding is hard to win. Keep Plus for the point when your direct billing passes $400 a month. The direct contracts page covers that route in detail. [5] [16]
