About Contra

Contra is a freelance platform for people who already have clients. Freelancers pay nothing on the free plan, clients pay $15 or $29 per payment, and the money moves slowly. People praise the contracts and invoicing; they criticise payouts, verification and a thin job board. [1] [2] [5] [9] [4]

Contra in one paragraph

Contra works as a workspace for paid projects. You set up a profile, bring or find a client, agree a contract, and the client pays into escrow for fixed, milestone or one-time hourly projects. Once the work is accepted, the money moves to your wallet and you request a payout. The free plan covers these steps, and Pro adds visibility and removes some fees. [4] [1] [6]

What it is like for freelancers

Freelancers who already have clients find the setup straightforward. The contract, invoice and payment steps are built in, and you can invite a client by name and email. The catch is the wait for money: a payout clears after four days, and identity checks can hold it longer. [8] [6] [7]

What it is like for clients

Clients post jobs and browse profiles for free, then pay a fee on each payment. Card payments carry 2.9% plus $0.30 in processing, and ACH or SEPA needs an access request. Clients who pay several freelancers a year find the paperwork handled in one place, and the escrow protects fixed and milestone projects. [2] [3] [4]

What people love, and what frustrates them

Positive reviews, mostly from 2025, praise zero commission, responsive support and fast withdrawals. Four or more reviews from April and May 2025 say the contracts, invoicing and payments tools save time. The newer complaints are about payouts held for review, verification failures, suspensions without explanation, and automated replies. [10] [9]

Who Contra suits

Contra suits experienced freelancers with clients, who want to stop paying commission on their own work. It suits clients who hire a few freelancers a year and want invoices and contracts. It fits poorly for beginners who need a steady flow of new work, for anyone who needs cash within a week, and for physical goods. [12] [13] [14] [11]
