Indie Hackers Tips

Before you pay $198 a year for IH+, read the free forum and get the refund terms in writing. Post milestones with real numbers, in the group where they fit. Expect little traffic from the site, since outside links are nofollow according to one guide. [1] [2]

Common mistakes and what to do instead

Paying for IH+ before reading the forum

What to do instead
Read the free forum for two weeks and note each case study you wish you could open
Why it matters
The case-study library is the only paid feature a reviewer rates [1]

Asking for refund terms after you pay

What to do instead
Get the window and the pro-rating rule in writing first
Why it matters
One reviewer reports 30 days, pro-rated, with no formula; one buyer got no reply [1] [6]

Posting in the wrong group

What to do instead
Pick the group where your post fits: Growth, Building, Marketing, Money, Launch or Self-Care
Why it matters
A guide says the wrong group can hurt visibility [2]

Expecting traffic from links

What to do instead
Treat the site as feedback, not as SEO
Why it matters
External links are nofollow, according to one guide [2]

Expecting results in days

What to do instead
Give it months of posting
Why it matters
NoonLaunch says some founders win customers only after months [7]

Launching cold

What to do instead
Comment on founders' posts in your space for two to four weeks first
Why it matters
Smol Launch, which sells launch plans, recommends it [5]

For founders: post numbers, in the right group

Post a milestone, not an announcement. The milestone types are Launch, First Customer, MRR Milestone, Press and Other. Vendor guides say specific numbers get the most useful replies. Neither shows data for that claim, so treat it as a habit, not a rule. [2] [3] [4]

Warm up before you launch. Smol Launch advises two to four weeks of comments on 10 to 15 posts by founders in your space before you launch. It sells a launch plan, so treat the timing as its advice. [5]

Keep the pitch short. Put the product mention in two sentences at the end of the post. The guide suggests 800 to 2,000 words for the post itself. [2]

For members: check the price and the refund first

Read the free forum before you pay. The case-study library is the feature the reviewer rates, and it sits behind IH+. Spend two weeks on the forum and note each case study you wish you could read in full. If that is fewer than one a week, the free forum is enough. IH+ pricing has the numbers. [1]

Get the refund terms in writing. One reviewer reports a 30-day window, pro-rated, with no formula. A June 2026 review says a buyer who asked for a refund after two days got no reply to four emails. Keep dated copies of every request. [1] [6]

Do not count on the site for traffic. External links are nofollow, one guide says, and NoonLaunch says results usually take months of posting. Judge the community by the feedback you get, not by visits. How posting works covers the first week. [2] [7]
