Selective talent network and AI data services · Pros and cons guide
Toptal's trial and replacement are its strongest points. Its weakest are price and screening: the client rate is not published, the $79 subscription needs three business days' notice to cancel, and talent complaints centre on a screening process that is hard to predict. [1] [2] [13] [5]

Each engagement opens with a trial of up to two weeks, and the FAQ says you are not billed if you are not completely satisfied. Clients can trial up to three people per position, and if a trial fails Toptal provides another expert. That is real protection for a client who hires someone who turns out not to fit. [1]
Guides disagree on what a trial costs. Cadence says trial hours are billable and convert to a full engagement unless you end the trial in the window, while Agency Review says a client can leave without paying. The FAQ does not say whether hours already worked are refunded if you end early. Ask that question in writing before the trial starts. [16] [15] [1]
Replacement timing is the other gap. Toptal's FAQ says finding and screening a new expert takes one to three weeks. Cadence puts a re-match at five to 14 days, and its source for that figure is not given. Plan for the longer figure if a deadline depends on the hire. [1] [16]
Toptal publishes no client rate card. Third-party estimates put general roles at $60 to $150 an hour or more and specialists at $200 or more. Over four weeks at 40 hours, a $60 to $150 rate is $9,600 to $24,000 (our arithmetic). The $79 subscription comes on top. [12] [13] [14]
The margin is undisclosed, and guides estimate it between 30 and 50 percent, using different bases. The client also pays the $79 subscription, which the FAQ lists without a currency. Guides name a $500 refundable deposit that Toptal's FAQ does not mention. Each of these adds to the cost before you know what the work will be. [14] [13] [1] [16]
Toptal says fewer than 3 percent of applicants are accepted. Its 'Why 3%' page lists five stages as shares of all applicants, from 26.4 percent at the language and personality stage down to 3 percent at the final stage. A talent applicant can't see which stage they will fail, and the page does not say whether those rates are cumulative. [7] [5]
For talent, the wait to reapply is the cost of a rejection. Toptal does not publish how long it is. Reports range from 30 days to six months, and accounts differ on a 2017 case. Budget at least a month if you are turned down, and possibly six. [3]
Clients see a different side of the same process. Toptal's own pages disagree on how fast it introduces candidates: the FAQ says within 24 hours, and the homepage says within days. Neither is backed by a dated sample, so treat either as a target, not a guarantee. [1] [6]
Toptal's talent FAQ says freelancers set their own rate and that Toptal takes no cut of their earnings. Three 2026 talent reviews call payment timely. One 2023 account says payment takes four to six weeks, and the FAQ gives no payment schedule. [3] [17] [9]
Two five-star talent reviews say pay is lower than other options, though neither gives a figure. Freelancers are not Toptal employees and are not eligible for visa sponsorship, which matters if you plan to relocate to take a role. [9] [3]
The screening complaints are not new. In 2026, a two-star talent review says a test seemed unfair and support would not reopen it, and a camera-off rule was never stated. Hacker News accounts from 2015 describe similar screening. The sample is small, and each complaint is a single account. [10] [18]
If you need one senior specialist within weeks, the trial and the replacement are the pros that matter. Pay the $79 subscription only while you are matching, cancel with three business days' notice, and get the deposit answer in writing first. [1] [2]
If you are hiring for a long engagement on a fixed budget, the cons weigh more. The rate is an estimate until the contract, and the margin is inside it. Ask for the rate in writing and compare it with the estimate ranges above. [13] [14]
If you are applying as talent, the screening and the reapplication wait decide your time more than the pay does. Expect a long wait if you are rejected. If you are accepted, check the payment timing in writing before you rely on it. [5] [3]
If you already pay for TopAccess, cancel before the renewal date. Early cancellation does not stop the remaining monthly payments, and a late fee of up to $30 applies. [4]
