How Wellfound Works

On Wellfound an application is sent once and cannot be withdrawn. If the company takes no action, it expires after two weeks. Recruiters find you only when your status is set to open, and applying works either way. The two clocks decide what happens next, so set your profile before you apply. [2] [3] [5]

Applications run on a timer, and you can't take one back

Applying takes three steps: click Apply, add an optional note in the pop-up, then send. Your profile and résumé go with it, and recruiters see the latest versions of both if you edit them later. Wellfound's help describes no confirmation screen, so check the Applied tab afterwards. [1] [2]

Once sent, an application cannot be withdrawn. If the company takes no action, it expires after two weeks, ending on the following Thursday, and it leaves the applications page six months later. An expired application frees up a slot under the active-application cap. [3] [4]

Being found depends on your status, and applying works either way

Recruiters find a job seeker only when the Jobs Profile status is “Open to Offers” or “Ready to Interview”, which makes the profile visible in candidate search. Hiding from a single employer works only if your entry is linked to that company's profile. [5]

Applying shows interest whatever your status. Startups can also message a candidate directly, but the candidate must accept the chat request first. Both routes lead to a Matches entry once there is mutual interest. [5] [6]

Mutual interest is the one signal Wellfound describes, and it has no timing

Wellfound gives no read receipt. The company receives your complete profile, but the Applied tab does not show whether it was opened. Mutual interest creates a Matches entry and a Wellfound introduction, and Wellfound gives no timing for either. [7]

Wellfound also caps active applications. Each candidate has a limit, the number is not published, and a candidate who hits it gets a warning and has to wait for applications to expire. [4]

Where job seekers and employers get stuck

Job seekers: the cap and the expiry make a rushed application expensive, because you can't withdraw it and the slot stays used until it expires. Tailor each note to the role, and put your fit in its first two lines. [4] [8]

Job seekers, on pay: salary is a guide. Listings with a salary range get wider distribution, and Wellfound's estimates come from comparable listings with no published sample size. [9] [10]

Employers: a listing with no salary range gets limited distribution unless you promote it. Startups can message candidates directly, but the candidate has to accept the chat first. Recruit Pro is $499 a seat a month. [9] [6] [11]

Both: Wellfound may ask for identity verification, and it does not say what triggers the request. Accepted IDs must be government IDs with Latin characters, at least 600 by 600 pixels and no more than 15 MB. [12]
