Indie Hackers FAQ

Indie Hackers costs nothing to read, and its paid tier, IH+, costs $198 a year. Stripe announced its purchase on 11 April 2017. The founders bought the company back in 2023; sources disagree on the month and on whether Stripe still holds a stake. [1] [12] [8] [11]

Your questions, answered

How much does IH+ cost?

IH+ costs $198 a year, billed annually. Divided by 12, that is $16.50 a month, but sources list only annual billing, so budget for the annual charge. The pricing page compares it with rivals. [1] [2]

Is Indie Hackers free?

Reading the forum and the Products directory is free. Posting has a wait for free accounts, and IH+ removes it. Two 2026 guides say every feature is free, though two reviews price IH+ at $198 a year. [1] [3] [4]

How long is the posting wait?

No length is stated. IH+ members post from day one, so check the wait on your own account when you sign up, and plan around it if you have a launch date. [1] [2]

Can I get a refund on IH+?

One reviewer reports a 30-day refund window, pro-rated, but gives no formula. A June 2026 Trustpilot review says a buyer's refund request after two days got no reply, so ask for the terms in writing before you pay. [1] [5]

Is IH+ worth paying for?

One reviewer says yes, mainly for pre-revenue founders up to about $5K MRR who will use the case-study library. The same reviewer says it is not worth it for accountability or peers at $10K MRR and above. The reviewer runs a paid founder group and did not subscribe to IH+. [1]

Will posting bring traffic or backlinks?

Not quickly. NoonLaunch says some founders win paying customers, but usually only after months of posting. One vendor database finds 4 of 68 bootstrapped apps list it as a channel, and one guide says external links are nofollow. [6] [7] [3]

Who owns Indie Hackers now?

The founders bought the company back in 2023. Sources disagree on whether Stripe still holds a stake. A 2023 podcast episode page says the company is “no longer owned by Stripe,” while guests on that episode describe “a significant stake” after Stripe's tender offer. A 2026 review calls Stripe a “seed investor,” and They Got Acquired says the founders are now majority owners. [8] [11] [1] [10] [9]

When did Stripe buy Indie Hackers, and for how much?

Stripe announced the deal on 11 April 2017, according to TechCrunch, which said there was “no word yet on the terms.” The price was not disclosed. [12]

When did the founders buy it back?

The buyback was announced in 2023. The announcement is dated 5 or 6 April, which points to April, though one 2026 review says March. [8] [9] [1]

Has the community declined?

The evidence shows recurring spam complaints, not a measured decline. Complaints about spam recur in Hacker News threads from 2017 to 2024, and the company added an invite code in 2021 to curb spam. In 2026, eight of 13 visible Product Hunt reviews are spam, and the one substantive review praises the revenue posts and says search could be sharper. [13] [14] [15]

What data does Indie Hackers collect?

A third-party reading of its privacy policy, dated December 2023, lists contact and account details, device information, IP address and forum content. It says data may go to affiliates and service providers, be used for interest-based ads, and pass to a buyer in a business sale. The privacy page sets out each point. [16]

Where can I find a co-founder or investor instead?

Indie Hackers is a forum, not a matching service. To find one specific person, such as a co-founder or investor, Omnitwine offers AI-assisted connections among eligible members. Tell its AI what you need, and it suggests members who fit, each with a reason. Both sides decide whether to connect. It is free and takes no cut, but it does not guarantee a reply. [17] [18]
