MentorCruise: Pros and Cons

MentorCruise's best feature is a 7-day trial that lets you test a mentor before the first charge. Its biggest cost is a 20% markup on every session, and the refund route for a silent mentor got narrower between 2023 and 2026. [1] [4] [5] [6]

The biggest pro: you can test a mentor before you pay

Most mentors offer a 7-day trial. Billing starts automatically, but if you cancel before the trial ends, nothing is billed. That gives you a week to judge whether a mentor answers your question, which is a better test than paying a first month on trust. [1]

Some mentors offer a pay-to-continue intro call instead. The help article says mentors “can” switch to intro calls but doesn't say which ones do. An intro call is $39 for about 15 minutes. [2] [3]

The biggest con: a fee on every session, and narrower refunds

MentorCruise keeps $20 of a $100 rate, which is 16.7% of the $120 you pay. That share repeats on every session. A Top Mentor Pro plan carries a 10% markup on plans above $800, capped at $200 a month. [4]

If the 20% is the problem, Omnitwine is free to use. Its AI suggests members who fit a mentoring goal, and both of you decide whether to connect. It runs no sessions, verifies no identity or skills and takes no payment, so you agree terms directly. If you're worried about payment, we recommend using an escrow service. [13] [14] [15]

Refunds are the weak spot. A 2023 help article promised refunds to mentees whose mentor kept ignoring them, with no threshold. The 2026 policy asks for more than a week of silence, two follow-ups and written proof that the mentor agrees. [6] [5]

Matching takes time, and choosing is still guesswork

The company says a mentor should know your goal and background before accepting, and that matching can take time. Company replies and reviews from 2022 to 2025 say the same, so start early and plan to try more than one mentor. [12]

Ratings don't always show on mentor pages, and filters are called restrictive. A 2024 two-star reviewer also says schedules aren't visible before you pay. Mentor quality varies, and two reviewers (2022 and 2024) question expertise or vetting. The trial is the cheapest way to check fit. [12]

Money can stop when the mentor does

Refund and cancellation disputes are the most repeated complaint, at least 5 of 108 reviews from 2022 to 2025. The company says the plan price is locked at signup, but a 2022 reviewer says they were asked to raise a locked monthly fee. The company also says a mentor may ask for a higher fee if the plan is judged insufficient. [12]

The homepage says “Try your first call for free with every mentor you're meeting.” The trial article says payment details are entered when the mentor accepts. The two describe the first payment differently, so read the checkout screen before you agree to a mentor. [9] [1]

For mentors: the admin is handled, the payout is partly described

Mentors say the platform runs scheduling, in-app payments and communication, and sends some clients. MentorCruise publishes one payout calculation: at the stated card rates, a $100 rate leaves the mentor $95.50 to $96.22. It publishes no commission schedule, minimum payout or tax treatment. [12] [10]

One mentor says their profile was hidden from search after they challenged Stripe invoices they consider not tax compliant, with no reply. An applicant was also rejected in September 2026 for leaving LinkedIn and Twitter fields blank. [12]

A growing con: the refund promise got narrower

The 2023 article said mentees are refunded when a mentor keeps ignoring them, and set no threshold. By 2026, the policy requires a week of silence, two follow-ups and written proof, and the company's separate claim of “over 85%” refunds has no period. Ask support in writing which rule applies to your case. [6] [5] [12]

Which matter most for you

If you want to test one mentor, the trial is the pro that matters most. Cancel before day seven if the first session doesn't answer your question. [1]

If you need a one-off answer, check the cost first. An intro call is $39 for about 15 minutes, and the help articles don't say who pays a one-off session fee of $9 to $39. [3] [4]

If you plan a long mentorship, the 20% and the refund rules weigh most. Budget the markup into what you pay, and keep dated messages from the start. [4] [5]

If you're a mentor, the card-fee calculation is the only payout figure published. Ask support for the commission and payout terms in writing before you set a rate. [10]
